Cocoon Building
There we were, Ellen and I, minding our own business and enjoying the beautiful day from the swing in the backyard when she pointed out a stick hanging there in the air just a few feet from us. Another interesting and surprising thing that happened is that earlier a butterfly came by and was showing off how beautiful he was. Creation is wondrous! Labels: entertainment
Suspended from a thin line of string was this little "stick". We sat there theorizing why this stick was hanging on this thread that was leading up to the tree tops in my backyard. I thought "is it conditioning?" imagining a spider dangling a stick as added weight to build endurance in his web building.
Ellen said "it could be construction" as if there was some type of plan coming to fruition from the wondrous architects of the arachnid world.
I played on that a bit and started to help whomever was at the top and holding the other end of the thread and said "go right, right...ok, there, now drop" and on cue, that stick suddenly dropped down another few inches.
It startled us both! LOL
Then, upon further inspection as we watched that stick suspended in the air, it suddenly began to MOVE!
It was alive!
Ellen said "it's a caterpillar and it must be spinning its cocoon!"
This is a video of that caterpillar's trek back up that string spinning a cocoon.
Sound effects provided by none other than Ellen! Girl, you crack me up! LOL

Pictures From the Framily Trip to Nashville
Justin is about to ship off with the Navy. In fact, he leaves us next week to begin his life's journey serving our country and we are so proud! Labels: entertainment, Personal Interest
One day a few weeks ago, Katie and I were driving around Nashville, lost. We drove by TPAC, the theater in the city, and on the marquee was an advertisement for a Bill Cosby show. When we saw it we just knew we needed to have a framily day out for this show because Bill Cosby is one of Justin's favorite entertainers.
We surprised Justin this past weekend with a trip to Nashville to see one of his "heroes" and we had a great time. Here are some pictures from that day in the city. Most were taken at the memorial downtown for all sorts of servicemen and women. It was a fabulous day!

Video: Toe Fungus Foot Soak
Katie just had to get this moment on her camera phone and created a video. Labels: entertainment, Personal Interest
As a food phobic I am quite grossed out by many of the smells this framily creates while cooking. Today, Justin treated himself to something with quite a lot of garlic and/or cheese or whatever that horrid concoction was.
This was payback!
The stink may linger for days! Basically I bring to a boil apple cider vinegar and add the herbs in as it cools. The vinegar is pretty potent! LOL
Anyway, I ended up with a minor toe fungus at some point last year. Yeah, I know, too much information! But, when the podiatrist said "we'll take off the nail and see what grows back in" I decided that there must be a better way.
A friend from church told me about Long Creek Herbs and the Nail Fungus Soak. I started treatment in May and this fungus is clearing up. I ran out of the soak and had to cook some more. This video is what transpired this evening.

Cookies Gone Wrong
My friend had been given a gift awhile back and passed it along to me the other day. She didn't think she would ever do anything with it. It is dry cookie batter in a Peanuts collector's bowl. The illustration on the bowl appears below and it isn't it cute? Labels: entertainment, Personal Interest
That's just too funny! LOL
So, last night I made the cookies. It was a disaster. I mistakenly added two eggs when it was supposed to be one. But, no problem, I caught that before I mixed all the ingredients together, so there I was scooping out the egg yolk, which went ok. Then I failed miserably at scooping out all the albumen, I mean, how do you "measure" that? I went ahead and mixed everything up and enjoyed some of the batter. That was delish! So then, Katrina puts the cookies on a cookie sheet and placed them in the oven. I said "I don't know if they will turn out".
So, about 15 minutes later we get them out. Justin was excited. I tried one first. It was horrid! LOL Really spongy! LOL *gag* *sputter* *gag*
So Justin tried one too and said "I've had pound cake in an MRE that was better!" LOLOL
We laughed and waited for Tif to come home. When she did Katrina said "shhhhhh, let her have one". So, as expected, as soon as she saw the freshly baked cookies still cooling on the top of the stove, she grabbed and ate. We all paused and waited for her reaction.
She crinkled up her face and declared "these are repulsive!" LOL
I got a great bowl out of the deal though!

Francesca Battistelli - New Artist and I LIKE HER!
Labels: entertainment, Personal Interest
Thanks to WayFM Nashville, I was introduced to Francesca Battistelli the other day. This video from a few years ago is of the song I heard her perform live in the studio with just her voice and guitar. It was raw and edgy and that is how I like my rock music. The released version however possesses the polished quality of studio production which somehow loses that "edge", but it is still very good, just more pop. I'm hoping that one day the acoustic version will be released as a "bonus" or something. I recommend the songs "Free to Be Me" and "The Time In Between", although "I'm Letting Go" is currently getting airplay on Christian stations.
Her voice timbre is similar to Nelly Furtado mixed with some Natasha Bedingfield, yet at times her voice inflection and tone reminds me of Shania Twain, with that clarity in the higher range and especially when she "bends" notes. The melodies are infectious and you'll find yourself humming them at various points throughout the day. It's good stuff. I think her music will have wide appeal with the youth as well as the older generations, which unfortunately I am now apart of. Ugh. When did that happen? LOL
One listen of the album "My Paper Heart" on Amazon was all it took and within minutes I had her music streaming into my ears from my mp3 player. It's sooooo good! It has been a really long time since new music really excited me, I think the last time was DecembeRadio, who by the way, has a new album being released toward the end of August. Yes! Family Force 5 has a new one coming too!
Anyway, I wanted to pass along my discovery and encourage you to check out Battistelli's music and maybe you will enjoy it as well!

I Must Be Tired
I went in to work very early this morning, but my manager let me leave early today. YAY! Labels: entertainment, Personal Interest
I came home and was motivated to start my decluttering project and tackle the laundry room, which doubles as a storage room, and triples as an extra guest room. It's complicated. Regardless, it's a mess and I get stressed out just knowing that room is attached to the house.
So I started in on it.
After working on it for a couple of hours, moving a rocking chair and filling one entire large trash can, I took a "short" break. Thing is I just found myself awakening from a nap.
I was seated in my chair and my head was on my desk in front of this computer which was blaring music...the "motivational" kind, you know, to clean by. I normally don't do naps, but this one was not intentional!
Hmmmm...I must be tired. After the last load I'm going to bed!

Christ. Community. Music.
I just received my last issue of CCM Magazine, and it is the LAST printed issue ever. It's going exclusively online. Labels: christianity, entertainment
A few months back, CCM Magazine changed their name/tagline from "Contemporary Christian Music Magazine" to "Christ. Community. Music. Magazine" Good change I thought because CCM doesn't mean the same today as it did two to three decades ago. Christian music has evolved and "CCM" did become quite outdated.
I'm sad. I've subscribed to the magazine for nine years and I will miss it.
While I am an online junkie, I do enjoy reading through a printed magazine; at night before bed, on lunch break at work, in the dentist's waiting room, etc. It's just nice to have a magazine lying around the house for a quick pick up read.
Supposedly the remaining issues on my subscription will rollover to ChristianDigitalStore.com for music downloads, which will suffice, but I'm still sad.

Kayaking: Lesson I - Rack 'Em Up
There sits a boat, a kayak to be precise. It is best used on water, but before one can get it to water, it is of utmost importance to strap it to a land vehicle for transport to the water. Labels: entertainment, Personal Interest
It just so happens I have a nice rack. LOL That was fun to say. LOL
Actually, my jeep has a nice rack.
Anyway, my friend is big into kayaking and today she was moving her kayaks to her new apartment. Her car is unavailable, but since my jeep has a rack, she said we'd be able to tie the kayaks down to that and transport them. Right now she is suffering from a debilitating injury that makes it impossible for her to lift anything so she directed her friend Kathy and I as to how to load them up and how to tie them down.
It was a new experience for me for sure, but we did it. We got those kayaks loaded up and strapped to the Jeep. I thought my aunt would be proud that the Jeep she left me was being used in a "sporty" way. She was a lover of the outdoors and so I snapped a picture of Jeepers with the kayaks strapped to him. We transported them without incident, well, almost. We had a slight difficulty with the dismount, but nothing we couldn't handle. All is well.
I think I passed the Kayaking: Lesson I.

Simple Things
Sometimes it is so easy to forget that each and every day small occurrences happen around us that should bless our hearts. These are things that become lost in the activities of life, yet when I take time to notice them, I realize that it is these things that put smiles on my face and joy in my heart. Labels: entertainment, Personal Interest
Here are some examples of things that I take pleasure in and some things that I consider to be blessings in my life.
First of all, I just have to say I really appreciate denim. I love how soft my jeans are and how rugged they can look at the same time. I love blue jeans! Denim rocks!
Something happened yesterday that is really sticking out in my mind, but it is such a small thing, I'm quite sure the other person involved never realized how big a deal it was to me. I have a friend who is suffering through a physical injury right now that makes it difficult to even move around, to the point that even sitting or lying down causes great pain, let alone standing and walking about. I was spending some time with her last night when she received a phone call. I looked around for the newspaper that I had yet to read for the day so she could carry on a conversation and not be concerned about me being occupied with something while she talked with her brother. The newspaper was not to be found and she noticed that so she strained to get up, fished through a pile of mail and magazines, located the recent US NEWS and WORLD REPORT that she knew I'd enjoy and handed it to me. I accepted it and she returned to her bed to rest, and continued her phone conversation. It was a seemingly small gesture, but it touched my heart in a huge way because I know what she goes through just to be able to move. I had NO IDEA she was trying to get up to serve me, but that is exactly what she did. I was so blessed by that.
I look forward to reading the morning paper over breakfast while drinking fresh hot coffee. It doesn't need to be Starbucks, in fact, I'm glad it isn't, just hot. After I add the cream and sugar it doesn't really resemble coffee anymore anyway, it just needs to be hot. It is such a simple pleasure and really just starts my day out right! It is quite possible that my enjoyment of this particular daily activity goes back to my growing up and the paper being there on the table while I ate breakfast. Gram was usually there with me, having already read the paper and by this time was working the crossword and mom was most likely milling about the kitchen serving me and my dad who has come out to join us at the table. Those were good times. I'm so sentimental!
The other night I had fallen asleep on my futon while doing my Bible study. Pen still in hand and everything. Katie came in, noticed this and awakened me by gently scratching my back, and removed the pen from my hand, the book from under my head and snickered slightly while doing so. That was a neat moment between friends and one of those small things that I can ponder in my heart, yet most likely Katie doesn't even remember it.
Tiffany has no idea how special it is for me when she calls to ask me permission to do something. I am the default when her mom isn't available, and it means so much to me. Last weekend she spent the day and night with a friend of hers and she had asked me permission. After quizzing her about this friend I said okay and added "no meth, no boys!" LOL Being a "not-the-mom" can really be a blessing.
Now I have the added blessing of having to leave for work. I have a job I enjoy, great people to work with, and it's time to go! Later!

Strep? No Strep? Strep? Pneumonia? Rheumatic Fever?
Katie's daughter, Tiffany, has been sick for a couple of weeks. Labels: entertainment, Personal Interest
I just don't understand why many trips to the doctor failed to yield much of anything. One has to wonder sometimes about the medical profession.
Way back on February 14 or 15 (a couple of weeks ago) Tif ended up with a fever. She wasn't feeling terribly bad or anything, just had fever. Her mom gave her some acetaminophen but it didn't help. Her temperature kept rising, way up to 103.5°! So, off to the ER one night she went.
Here's a brief summary of the events/diagnoses in the days/weeks following:
Two weeks later, today, Tif returns to school, but I wonder if she will make it through the day.
One thing though, her suffering this week has seemed to make her more compassionate for others who suffer chronic pain. I pointed out to her that some people she knows suffer from pain due to illnesses with no cure and she was surprised by what I told her and by whom was afflicted. She said "I would kill myself" and asked how they do it. I don't know but for the grace of God.
Then she saw me limping about and asked "your feet hurt?" and I said "uh, yeah, that's why I've been seeing a podiatrist, he treats my Achilles tendonitis." She had no clue -- mind you, I've been limping around now for months! LOL
She also sincerely thanked her mom for taking care of her (which was NOT easy! Not easy for mom to take care of her, and NOT easy for Tif to recognize the efforts of a caretaker! LOL).
From better days, here's a repost of a humorous YouTube video by Tif and her friend Emilie discussing whether Brunettes or Redheads are better? This is Tif at her comedic best! LOL It's garners close to 150 comments so far, so join the fun!

Spanish Panic
Katie and I went to see Justin perform in Once Upon a Mattress, the school musical this year. Labels: entertainment, Personal Interest
I was so proud of Justin this night, and I feel so blessed because Katie my dear friend, lets me share in these experiences with her kids.
This is just an excerpt of Justin dancing the Spanish Panic in one scene. He's so handsome -- watching him dance reminds me of Patrick Swayze!
Tiffany is also in the musical, but unfortunately she is very ill with "strep throat" (in quotes because I question the medical "professionals" working the overnight shift at the local hospital), and has also been diagnosed with pneumonia by the family doctor. She's not able to make the performances which is a drag because of all the time and work that went into it.
Great performance JCS thespians!

Can Our Brains Sense the Future?
I had a freaky type of an experience today. Nothing earth shattering, but something that made me go hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm? Labels: entertainment, Personal Interest
You know Deja Vu?...we've all experienced that sensations of "I've been here before" = weird.
I didn't have an "I've been here before moment", but more of a "can I tell the future moment?"
Well, today after seeing a movie, I was waiting for Justin before we walked to the car and I started humming a melody that I am familiar with having performed arrangements of it in various ensembles I have played in. I was humming "Bacchanale" from Camille Saint-Saëns's Samson et Dalila. It's got a really cool melody and I think it could be transformed into an energetic rock tune (which probably already has somewhere along the line but I am not aware of it.) Anyway, that was that. I thought it, hummed it to myself, and went on with life.
Justin and I get in the car...and I hit SCAN on the radio (WSCAN is my favorite station on FM) and THE FIRST STATION IT CAME TO WAS PLAYING BACCHANALE!
I've never heard that piece on the radio before and there it was! That was just too freaky! I was like "NO WAY!" I can tell the future! (To listen and watch it performed click here. I was humming the finale which starts at about the 6:12 marker.)
It does make me wonder if our brains do have the capacity to have an inclination as to what is up ahead, in the immediate future. And...what if we could tap into that? Maybe we could practice and tap into the not-so-immediate future? ...would we want to?
It bloggles the mind!

Yule Be Entertained!
Labels: entertainment, Holiday
Amy posted this YouTube video and calls in the Best Christmas Performance Ever. I followed a link from her comment at the Moral Science Club where Jim was calling the Bing Crosby and David Bowie duet the greatest ever. I do recommend viewing the above video, yule get a chuckle from it and be impressed by the talent as well.
I have so many Christmas favorites, it's hard to call any one of them the "greatest ever", but it sure is fun to bring out the old tunes year after year. It seems my true Christmas favorites are songs that take me back to my childhood.
Do they make any "classics" anymore? What is the most recent song that has become a Christmas standard? One might say "The Christmas Shoes" by Newsong, or possibly "Mary Did You Know" sung by many artists in the past few years. I'd say the Trans-Siberian Orchestra has created Christmas classics with their rock opera styled music and show, but classics are few and far between. Then again, that's what makes them classic.

Then He Smiled At Me
The Little Drummer Boy by the Harry Simeone Chorale is one of my favorite Christmas songs. It started to play in the car today on a burned disc I made of some Christmas favorites. When the brummm brummm brummm started I turned up the volume, but Katie grimaced and expressed disinterest in this song. Labels: christianity, entertainment, Holiday
Repost from December 14, 2005
I was puzzled, how could this be? I said "whaaat? This is one of my favorites and I can't listen to it and not tear up!" I decided Katie must not get out of this song what I do, so I decided to explain it to her and maybe give her some insight and perspective she has not considered before. After I was done, she admitted that she now hears the song differently and wants to hear it again!
While the song played, I would stop the player now and then to emphasize the lyric and what it means...what it means to me. (I don't know if how I interpret the song has anything to do with the author's/composer's inspiration or thought that was meant to convey, but it is what I get out of the song. This is solely my own interpretation.) Come, they told me (pa-rum-pa-pa-pum)
The first verse of the song basically sets the stage and this young boy was told that these people were traveling to see a newborn baby who would someday be a king. People are bringing all sorts of gifts to honor him.
A new-born King to see (pa-rum-pa-pa-pum)
Our finest gifts we bring (pa-rum-pa-pa-pum)
To lay before the King (pa-rum-pa-pa-pum
rum-pa-pa-pum, rum-pa-pa-pum)
So to honor Him (pa-rum-pa-pa-pum)
When we come
Baby Gesu (pa-rum-pa-pa-pum)
I am a poor boy, too (pa-rum-pa-pa-pum)
I have no gift to bring (pa-rum-pa-pa-pum)
That's fit to give a King (pa-rum-pa-pa-pum
rum-pa-pa-pum, rum-pa-pa-pum)
Shall I play for you (pa-rum-pa-pa-pum)
On my drum?
Mary nodded (pa-rum-pa-pa-pum)
The ox and lamb kept time (pa-rum-pa-pa-pum)
I played my drum for Him (pa-rum-pa-pa-pum)
I played my best for Him (pa-rum-pa-pa-pum
rum-pa-pa-pum, rum-pa-pa-pum)
Then, He smiled at me (pa-rum-pa-pa-pum)
Me and my drum
Now this is when the song gets really interesting!
"Baby Gesu, I am a poor boy too, I have no gift to bring that's fit to give a king" The kid identifies with the babe because he sees Him as "poor". He's born in a stable, wrapped in cloth amongst the beasts of burden, and it's cold. The boy probably thinks that this kid is in need of some of the gifts that are being given to him, yet, because he is a "poor boy too", he didn't bring anything. He didn't bring anything at all that would be worthy to give a king. I wonder, was the boy embarrassed? Was he curious as to what the fuss was all about? Maybe he felt somewhat self-conscious that all these people were there bearing gifts, and he had not one thing to give. Did the boy feel ashamed? Unworthy perhaps? Do you ever feel that way? Do you ever feel unworthy..unfit to see the King?
Imagine that...having nothing to give Him. We do have NOTHING to give Him that He has not already given everything to us! But, there is one thing we can give Him. The one thing we can give to God that He doesn't first give to us is praise and worship. So, the boy stands before the baby in a manger, with no gift to give Him, and asks him "shall I play for you on my drum?"
I had to stop the player at this point! Think about this...The kid says he has "nothing", but he has everything God has gifted him with. The kid plays a mean drum! So, what does he do with the gift God gave him? He gives it right back to God! I LOVE THAT! God gave us all gifts...we are supposed to give them back to Him! It is called worship!
I restart the song where we left off. So now what is the answer? Can he play his drum? Here is this tired mother who just hours ago gave birth to a seven pound, ten ounce baby (Obgyn 1:1) and here comes this dirty, poor, young boy asking to play a drum. It is quiet. The babe is resting, the mother is still and kindly accepting the gifts coming to him from the respectful visitors, the animals are hushed and the night is still. All that is heard is the crackle of the fire warming the area and casting a flickering, dim light on the people, and here comes a boy and a DRUM! A drum! I'm sure Mary was thrilled with the idea of him banging a drum! Imagine a kid coming to play a drum at the next baby shower you attend! Drums are not usually welcome at those events! LOL
The next verse is one verse that blows me away...Mary nodded. This is a nod of affirmation from a tender-hearted mother, and then the boy begins to play. Creation joined in when The ox and lamb kept time. (Psalm 96:9 "Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness; tremble before him, all the earth.") The moment was filled with praise and worship because one young boy played his drum, offering the gift God gave him back to His Lord. The Little Drummer Boy was the first worship leader!
I played my drum for Him, I played my best for Him! That's all the kid knew to do! He gave it his everything too and here is where the music really begins to crescendo. The animals have joined in, the people bearing gifts are listening and clapping maybe and tapping their feet to the sound of the drum. The music continues to build to an intense climax and then the drumming stops. It ends suddenly with a decrescendo, a brummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm that fades away into silence. The little drummer boy stops playing.
Now the great pause!
Silence...for just a moment.
What transpires in that moment? The boy has just offered his best performance on his drum. Was it enough? Was it enough to please the king...the tiny baby lying before him? There is anticipation in the air...the animals are quiet, the gift-bearing crowd is awaiting the next moment, wondering if the boy's gift of drumming had any impact at all? Everyone is still and quiet waiting for something...anything...to happen next. Then....
(slightly slower tempo here to contrast the climax of the drummer's offering.)
He smiled at me,
Me and my drum.
That's the line that gets me every time! I can hardly listen and not have tears well up.
"Well done my good and faithful servant" is what that says to me!
The Little Drummer Boy is such an impacting story to me, and I enjoy the vocal interpretation by the Harry Simeone Chorale to help convey the tenderness, majesty, mercifullness and joy of this story. We come to the Lord with all we have, which without Him, is nothing. We deserve nothing. Yet, he gives. He gives us all we have. He gave us His One and Only Son, who died and was raised. We praise Him for that. We worship Him. We are to worship Him with everything that He gave us...our heart, soul, mind and strength! And a drum...or whatever else He has gifted you with! When you do that...He will smile at you. So, play your drum!

Taps
Today was Veteran's Day. Labels: entertainment, Holiday, Personal Interest
Thank you veteran's of war...for fighting for the freedoms I enjoy as an American. Thank you families of servicemen and women for your sacrifice as well. Let us never take what you do, and have done, for granted.
Today I was honored to play "Taps" at the conclusion of the concert with the Jackson Symphonic Winds. This was not something I had planned to do, but was asked by the conductor shortly before the start of the program which was patriotically themed in honor of Veteran's Day. He came up with the idea to read the "unofficial" lyrics to taps, and then have me play it.
Taps is not a technical challenge to play, however, what makes it difficult is the fact that it is somber and it is to be played reverently. It's performance commands the attention and focus of an audience, therefore all eyes and ears are on the performer. I was humbled to perform it today.
Tonight, I received one of the best compliments on a performance I have ever received. It had to do with Taps and the email reads "...your taps gave me goose bumps."
Day is done, Gone the sun
From the lakes, From the hills, From the sky
All is well, safely rest.
God is nigh.
Fading light, Dims the sight
And a star, Gems the sky, Gleaning bright
From afar, Drawing nigh,
Falls the night.
Thanks and praise, For our days,
Neath the sun, Neath the stars, Neath the sky,
As we go, This we know,
God is nigh.
Thank you to all veterans!
When I remember what freedom costs, it gives me goosebumps.

Las Vegas Trip
I just returned home from visiting my sister in Las Vegas. We kept ourselves quite entertained going horseback riding, bowling, walking the strip and seeing what all the casinos were about. We even went to see The Hoover Dam...what an amazing sight! Labels: entertainment, Personal Interest
The best part of the trip though was spending time with mom and my sister, and even getting to see my nephew Cory. The last time I saw him he was shorter than me!
Driving around Las Vegas, it was really amazing to see the tall buildings, which basically amount to what man accomplishes. Trump Tower stands as an isolated building in the desert, adorned in gold, with a bold "TRUMP" announcing a triumph of a wealthy man. It must be something to stand back and look at a building with one's name on it. While all those buildings are impressive, nothing impressed me more than the mountains I saw and just the beauty of God's creation.
Man never made a mountain.

Gambling for Dana
I won't gamble, but recently while visiting my sister in Las Vegas, my mom showed me the slots. A co-worker had asked me to take $5 and put it in the slot machine for her, but I refused. When I told my mom about that, she offered to play that $5 voucher she had won earlier for Dana. This is a video I created out of that experience. Labels: entertainment, Personal Interest
I don't understand gambling, except that a lot of people who can't afford to throw money away keep making the people, whose names are on a lot of the tall buildings in Las Vegas, even richer.

Professionals? Wrote This?
When I first saw this headline, I said to myself, tongue in cheek of course, it probably would have been better for him to have quit before the suicide. Labels: CurrentEvents, entertainment
But, then I read the summary line of the article the headline links to and became even more confused? "...the body declined to rezone his property?"
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? *shakes head in disbelief*
Click here to read article...it does make a bit more sense, but really. Couldn't professional journalists have done a slightly better job with that headline? It's a very tragic and sad story.

Parents Need to Accept Their Responsibility
Labels: entertainment
My friend Mary took a picture of this sign because we all thought it was so funny!
You should have seen everyone scramble when "last call" was announced! LOL I hope you know I'm only kidding!
This was posted at the food bar at a local restaurant, Barnhills, where we enjoyed a Sunday buffet.
But it is true...parents really should accept the responsibility of accompanying their kids to the bars. Have you ever stood back to watch some of these children at the food bar? Makes me wonder why I still choose to eat from them!

Ahhhh....FINALLY!
The Jackson Symphony Orchestra called to ask me to perform for their next concert an exTreme Classical Makeover with the Capital Quartet, a saxophone quartet "specializing in Innovative Orchestral Pops". I always jump at an opportunity to perform with the orchestra! Labels: entertainment, Personal Interest
After I received my music folder, I thumbed through it to see what all I was going to be learning and performing. There's some great stuff in there! But, one piece stands out to me because of some personal history.
When I was a freshman at Highland High School, Scott Nelson, our band director at that time, challenged us to learn the 4th Movement of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5. It was a huge undertaking and I never practiced for something so hard in my life up until that time. (Listen to the 28 second intro)
It was such a team building experience because everyone in the band was challenged to learn an extremely difficult piece of music for our level of playing, but as we rehearsed and listened to ourselves, we truly were rising to the occasion. Being a freshman, I was also very motivated to learn the part and prove myself to the upperclassmen.
After weeks of practicing on our own, and rehearsing as a group, we were on our way to raising some eyebrows and blowing the audience away with our performance. It was something every band member was looking forward to and one of those sweet moments that one anticipates after so much hard work and effort went into it.
Well, a week before the performance, tragedy struck me. I had a bike accident.
I was out riding my bike which was not unusual for me at that time, when I noticed my mom, Gram and sisters coming up the road from running Saturday morning errands. She stopped and through the passenger side window we held a short conversation, and I don't even remember the topic. Anyway, as mom started to pull away, I had a "great" idea...I was going to race her home!
Yeah! Great idea! So I stood up on the bike to really put my weight into the foot that would pump the pedal of my bike. On the third pump, my foot suddenly slipped off the pedal when the chain on my bike popped off. My foot hit the ground with great force and the frame of my bike was halted in an instant. However, I was not! I kept moving forward with the bike falling with me. I went right over the handlebars and hit the rough gravel and tar pavement chin first and then proceeded to kiss the ground.
Mom thought she had hit me because I fell out of her line of vision, to the front right of the car. She just saw me go down. A neighbor who witnessed this accident told us she thought, "Oh my God, she hit her!". But, that was not the case, nope, it was all me and a bike that malfunctioned.
When I managed to untangle myself from the bike wreckage, I stood up, and hurried somewhat frantically to the backdoor of the car to get in, but both my sisters only saw the bloody pulp that was once my face and freaked. They both slid across to the other side of the car, backing away from me, frightened of the sight they beheld. Well, the door was locked! I couldn't get in! Someone finally unlocked the door and we headed home.
I spent that afternoon in the ER of Medina County Hospital. Thankfully I did not get any stitches, but instead was "taped" up. My chin was pretty cut up, but the worst was my upper lip. My lip was split right down the middle.
I remember not being able to smile or laugh because it was open up the cut in my lip. I used to hold the tape on my lip any time I would smile and that is just no way to live! The worst part was that I was injured and would not get to play Shostakovich 5! I was so brokenhearted.
It is really a drag to work so hard on something, have it within your grasp, and then watch it drift away in an instant. I went to the concert and supported my band mates while they put on an awesome performance without me. I've always felt like I missed out on something great by not performing with the band that day.
But, now, I get another chance! 27 years later on Saturday, September 22, 2007, I will perform Shostakovich with the Jackson Symphony Orchestra! Sweet! FINALLY!

Spontaneous Drive-In Movie Night
Labels: entertainment, Personal Interest
After dinner conversation turned to drive-in movies and the waitress, overhearing our conversation, mentioned that a new Drive-In opened in Camden, TN.
We decided right then and there to go! Spontaneity! You gotta love it!
We came home, Googled the Birdsong Drive-In Theater in Camden, TN, printed a map and directions and we were off! The picture is what we looked like (obviously straining to get all three of us in the pic) when we pulled out of the driveway!
An hour and a half later we arrived at the theater and enjoyed popcorn and a movie from the comfort of my jeep! Drive-Ins...what makes them so fun?
They are less expensive for sure, partly because you get a double-feature! (Of course, for the gas we spent on the 90 minute drive one way we didn't really save anything! That, and we didn't stay for the second movie or we wouldn't have arrived home until after 2am...waaaaay too late for us!) Also, the comfort of the car is nice, although I'm not sure the person in the back seat would say the same. Being able to adjust the volume by way of the radio dial is nice too! Concessions were also reasonably priced.
Things I forgot in the nostalgia of remembering drive-in movies would be the fact that people are constantly walking around, and sometimes in front of your car. Lights are an issue, and we were getting a double feature with a remnant fireworks display being shot off in the neighborhood. We were parked in the rear of the lot and therefore pretty far from the screen, so The Transformers looked pretty small to us! Toward the end of the movie, the windsheild started fogging up and blurred the picture! Ugh! It was one of those hot and muggy summer nights when its hard to find the right balance of defrost and air to keep the windshield clear.
All and all it was a blast! We laughed and had a great time as a framily!
Woohooo! Yay for spontaneous drive-in movie night!

This Excites Me
I mean this REALLY excites me. Labels: christianity, entertainment, Personal Interest"But in my opinion, the movie will be infinitely better than the book. Essentially we’ve taken the major, real life characters from the book, and gave them a story all their own. The end result is provactive and humorous and in my opinion quite moving. I cant wait for people to see the film." -Donald Miller

Driving in Albania = White Knuckles!
No lanes painted on the road surface. Drivers just make up the rules as the go along I guess. Bicycles weave in and out of traffic and pedestrians walk across the road seemingly not even paying attention to the cars and trucks on the road. Horns honk consistently as drivers just signal to let you know they are there. Labels: entertainment, Personal Interest
Interestingly enough, it is said that the ratio in Albania is less accidents than in the USA.
I heard that may be due to the fact that you are imprisoned if you are involved in an accident that causes injury to someone else. Now, that's a consequence.
Well, these are videos taken by Katrina during her Albanian mission. She said it was the scariest part of the whole adventure!
This one below is of a traffic jam and in it you'll see Mary freaking out! It's every car, truck and bus for himself!

Jacob's Field
OH MAN! I HAD SO MUCH FUN AT THE INDIAN'S GAME! It was my first time ever at Jacob's Field and I was excited to check out the Indian's home. I had seen them play a few times at the old Cleveland Stadium, and had heard wonderful things about "The Jake", and couldn't wait to go there. Well, this past Saturday my sister Dawn, and her boyfriend Leroy, headed to the game. The special bonus was the rental car my sister had (she was in from Las Vegas) was upgraded by the rental car attendant just for the heck of it to a WHITE MUSTANG CONVERTIBLE! I was stylin'! Riding without the top all the way into downtown Cleveland! Woohooo! Labels: CurrentEvents, entertainment, Personal Interest
There is something really awe inspiring about entering a stadium, it can give you that "wow" feeling, especially when it's the first time ever being there. We got into Cleveland a good hour before the first pitch, parked without much effort at all, and walked a few blocks to the field.
We had tickets up pretty high because they were the only ones left with Detroit in town...Tigers AND Piston's for Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals. There was anticipation in the air and I could feel the electricity. We climbed and climbed up and up and up after we entered the gates at the Jake and when we made it to our section, we walked down a short "hall" to check out the field.
It almost takes ones breath away. The backdrop of the city with The Terminal Tower on the left, the Q right across the way where the Cavs were set to play in a couple of hours, and people gathering in the courtyard just outside to watch the NBA action on the big screen. The motion and lighted activity of the giant scoreboard in centerfield immediatly grabs your attention. The green of the perfectly manicured field and Chief Wahoo greeting us everywhere we looked. The usher offered to take a pic of us with my camera and I think he did a great job! (I'm the one on the right.) Leroy's Yankee's attire earned him a few friendly jabs from Indian's fans! LOL
The Indian's didn't play like a first place team that night, but that didn't hurt the fun I was having. People were just feeling good, and there was contagious fun and excitement in the air. I only had one bad experience which I will share now.
There were a few small pop-up storms happening around the Cleveland area and at one point the wind really kicked it up a notch. We were purchasing our souvenirs and ballpark franks in the concessions area, which is on the outside of the building, and like I said, we were up high. My arms were full as I was carrying my large bag of popcorn, hotdog, and bottled water, which had no cap (for whatever reason we are not allowed caps on water bottles), in my left arm, and in my right I was holding my Dr. Pepper in my souvenir cup...with no lid, because lids aren't allowed either. Well, as I waited for Leroy to get his order, I stepped to the side. I was standing at the opening of the field, which was basically like a tunnel that goes from the concessions area to the stadium seats. The wind really picked up bigtime and I was soon standing in a wind tunnel with hurricane force winds!
Suddenly my popcorn started blowing all around like it was in the popper at the movies! It was flying everywhere, and then my new Chief Wahoo cap started to raise off the top of my head. My sister said "Sue, your cap!" and my reflex was to grab it. Unfortunately, my grabbing hand, my right hand, was holding my large cup of Dr. Pepper!
My arm shot up, and when the cup stopped, the Dr. Pepper kept shooting upward in the path of the trajectory! With the wind blowing, it blew all that Dr. Pepper all over everyone standing in line! Popcorn was still blowing dizzily all around me, now it was raining Dr. Pepper, and the people in line all screamed! They literally all screamed! One guy in line was covered in Dr. Pepper from head to toe, and he had been dressed in all white. Now he was quite spotted with cola! OOPS! All I could do is apologize. I felt so bad. At least he was pretty cool about it. I just kept apologizing. I was so embarrassed too!
At least I saved my Chief Wahoo cap! Yay!

Great Time to Be Home in Cleveland!
Woohooo! I was downtown tonight and there was a HUGE party goin' on! Go Cavs! Finally a conference champion and now going to the finals to win it all! Labels: entertainment, Personal Interest
I'm home in Ohio visiting and my sister, her boyfriend, and I headed to The Jake to watch the Indians play. They didn't play well, definitely not like a first place team, but there was a lot of electricity in the air, because just across the street at the Q, were the Cavs. They were on fire and the city is rockin' like the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame!
Oh what fun!
I had a blast at the game! I'm having a blast being home! I'm really tired now, but I do have some stuff to share about my visit which I will in the next day or two. Good stuff.
I have an awesome family!
Go Cavs! Go Tribe!

Brunettes or Redheads
Oh, the things teenagers do. Labels: entertainment
Katie sure is blessed to have quite the creative kid who chooses her friends very well.
EmilIE was over one night and she and Tif decided to make their own video with the webcam. They were just fooling around and started a debate over whether brunettes or redheads are "better"?
They cracked me up so bad in this video, that I edited in some titles and posted this to YouTube. (They never intended it to be seen by anyone outside of the household, but you know how that goes.)
The reviews are in and people find this hilarious, so check it out and see for yourself!

Did You See Us On TV?
Hey! Thanks for dropping by the Sisters' Weblog! It seems we have a few new visitors since we made our television debut tonight! Whew! I was nervous a bit about how our hour and a half interview would come together into a two minute segment on the news, but I think it turned out well. Labels: Blogging, christianity, entertainment, Personal Interest
>>>>INSERTED: CLICK HERE TO SEE A VIDEO OF OUR TV INTERVIEW<<<<<
Here's a pic of what we looked like on tv. I'm hoping to get the actual video of it to post, because they actually included some of the parts where I talked about Ganns, my friend in the Phillipines, and the atheist that we communicated with a few years ago about matters of faith. I tried to take a video with my camera of the tv, but that doesn't work out so well...you get all those black lines that float throughout the frame. What is that anyway? Half the time we looked like talking torsos. LOL
There was only one thing that was reported in error, and that was the part where the reporter said I, Sue, was from Kansas. I am not from Kansas. I have never been to Kansas. My sister lived in Kansas for a short while, like 6 months, but he wouldn't have known that, and it really has nothing to do with me. Anyway, Katie and I figured out why the error happened. After the "shoot" two weeks ago, we were talking with Brad Douglass and the camerawoman about our story and mentioned how we met on the Internet. We gave them a quick rundown of some of the interesting things that happened to bring me to TN and they said "Wow! See! All the really interesting stuff comes AFTER the interviews!" So, I think they tried to recall what we said and got most of it right, just not the Kansas part.
I actually moved here from Iowa, although my home is Ohio.
Oh, you can read that interesting story about how we met and became friends by clicking HERE. Yeah, we posted the interview my dog Whyzer did one day about how Katie and I became friends. (Yep, you read that right!) You can find out even more about us by looking in the menu on the right under each of our names and then click "take a closer look" and that will open a menu and you can follow the links to various bio pages and other sites.
What you will find on the pages of Sisters' Weblog: It Bloggles the Mind! are many things. We share about day to day things, sometimes just the silly things that we do or we might share about spiritual lessons we have learned or are in the process of learning. We want to glorify God by using this blog as a vehicle to share our faith in Christ, that is our main goal. We can be theologically deep at times, and just plain silly in other moments...but that is because we only try to be who God created us to be. God loves the sound of our laughter and holds our hearts in the palm of His hand when we hurt. He is the reason we are friends, and to Him be the glory!
Here is a file of the transcript of "The Blogosphere" if you care to read the interview as it was presented in the television segment. Like I said, we hope to get a video of the interview asap!
If you saw us on the news, let us know what you thought by leaving a comment! We'd love to hear from you. If you just happened by, leave a comment too! We'd like to meet you!

Fun With Webcams
Labels: entertainment
It was late, it was time for bed, but nooooooo, we decided to play around with the webcam!
No we are NOT on drugs!
We don't normally look like this!
We don't normally behave like this, well....uhhhh, maybe a little. We do like to laugh! THAT'S FOR SURE!
So this video will give you a little bit of insight as to what goes on around here when Katie and I are together. The thing that cracked Sue up so much was what Katie said about having too much "recipe". That is in reference to a running storyline on The Waltons. (We are big Walton's fans in this household.) The "recipe" is moonshine that the Baldwin sisters offer to guests in their home. The still, and the "recipe", was left to them by their well-respected father, Judge Baldwin, and in their innocence they don't know that what the "recipe" is. They just believe it is a tasty, refreshing drink and kindly offer to people who DO know what it is, but no one wants to let them in on the "secret".
This video, I guess, is also a bit of a "preview" as to what we will look like this upcoming Tuesday, when the Sisters' Weblog will be featured on "The Blogosphere", a news special on WBBJ, the local ABC tv affiliate.
Wow...I'm so embarrassed. LOL

Sisters' Weblog Featured on TV
Living with Katie sure has it's exciting moments! (Exciting is not always a good thing...but today it was!) Today, WBBJ, the local ABC affliliate is here at the house interviewing us about a special series they are doing on blogging. "The Blogosphere" Labels: Blogging, entertainment
is a series that will run on Tuesdays, starting tomorrow (April 24) through May. It should be really fun! Tune in to WBBJ on May 8th to see US! (If you are an early riser and miss the show at 10pm on the 8th, you can catch the segment again on Wednesday, May 9th at 5:30 am.)
I have to admit, it is pretty rough trying to blog with a GIANT camera in your face! LOL
AAAAUUUGGGHHHH!! The pressure!
Right now as I type, they are going for the sound of the typing on the keyboard. This is very interesting! All this recording for probably 2 minutes of material.
Next, Katie will be up to be interviewed and I'm sure she will have A LOT to say! (She always has A LOT to say!) LOL
Well, hmmmmm....not sure what I'm to be doing now. There is a camera pointed at me and I'm supposed to keep typing as though I am blogging for real. I am blogging for real! LOL
(A little later after Katie's interview we had to do a "fake" blog together...what you are reading right now is this "fake" blog)
We told them how we share our faith and everything else that goes on in our lives on our blog. We consider this series "The Blogosphere" on the news, and our inclusion in it a God thing....another opportunity to spread the Word and could possibly drive more traffic to the Sisters' Weblog, to glorify God even more!
Dreaming Big....Katie's recent retreat was all about God's desire to dream big for us, His children. Katie didn't understand the "dream big" part, but now that the Sisters' Weblog is an "Award Winning Tennessee Blog" and is being featured on local television...well, hey, that's pretty big. Not like earth shattering big, but big enough!
It bloggles the mind!

Ever wonder why the standard paper size is 8.5 x 11 inches? (at least in the US?) I just had the thought come into my mind today and wondered why it is that the paper we write on in notebooks is a certain size, as is the paper we now run through printers?
Who decided that all paper was to be this size??!!??
So I Googled and what I found blogged my mind!

Katie with Barlow Girl
We went to a Barlow Girl concert tonight. This is the second time they've played in Jackson, TN at West Jackson Baptist Church. They RAWKED! Last year they opened for Rebecca St. James, but this year they were the headliner! It was awesome! Labels: entertainment
For Katie's birthday today, I gave her some $ to buy a Barlow Girl songbook so she could learn some of their songs to play on her piano. (That and I'm so wanting to hear her practice something different already! LOL)
After the show Katie decided to have her songbook signed and so Justin snapped this pic of Katie with Barlow Girl.
Fun night!

Diagnosis
This is a hypothetical conversation between the "afflicted" and "caretaker". Labels: entertainment, Personal Interest
"Ok, here are the symptoms."
"Right, ok, now do this...any better?"
"Nope"
"Well, then, try this."
"No, still not better. In fact, it may be worse."
"Oh, well, that's not good. In that case, try this. It works sometimes."
"Ugh, it is still no better and I'm a lot more frustrated."
"These things sometimes take time. What are the symptoms again?"
"ohhhhhhh...grrrrrrrrrrrr"
"If we could only find the cause."
"Yes, if only."
Funny, (not in a ha ha sort of way, but in a coincidental-bizarre-unfortunate way!) how similar a conversation Katie has with her doctor sounds an awful like the chats I've been having with tech support lately.

The Movies Were a Trip
Katie and I went to see Rocky Balboa today. I had seen it before and really thought Katie would enjoy it too, so we both went. Labels: entertainment
We arrived later than I had planned, so by the time we entered the theater with our popcorn and drinks, the lights were down and the previews were showing.
Having just come in from the lighted hallway, it took a minute for our eyes to adjust. Unfortunately, when we started to ascend the stairs, we hadn't given our eyes enough time to adjust to the darkness, so we were being guided by the lights on the steps.
I was in front, popcorn in my left hand, drink in my right. This theater has stadium seating so, the climb is fairly steep up the steps, however they are staggered. There is a step, then a longer platform, then the next step, platform, step, platform, step. My brain knows this, and my eyes could see the lights on the edges of each step.
But, eyes can play tricks!
Suddenly I was realizing I was taking a step up where there was no step! I stumbled but was able to catch myself before anything tragic occurred. Katie was behind me and I started upward again, but became disoriented by the lights and the fact that I was taking more steps where there were no steps!
It was as if there was an optical illusion and my brain couldn't comprehend the messages my eyes were sending it about where the steps actually were! I was stumbling around like a drunkard and feeling rather embarrassed by this because the rest of the audience (only two people, thank goodness!) had already adjusted to the darkness and I'm sure could see what a fool I was making of myself!
I stopped to get my bearing and asked Katie "can we sit here?" and she said "no". This was VERY disappointing to me because a seat sounded safe! I was reeeeaaaallly hoping to slide over into that row to safety, but nooooooooo, Katie can't sit that close because it makes her dizzy.
So, up I went again and this time I really lost my balance and went stumbling, only catching myself against the rail to my left. My popcorn went flying like hundreds of birds fleeing a tree when startled. Katie started laughing and I just started picking up popcorn!
"Can we please sit here?" and with an affirmative from Katie, we carefully made our way into that row of seats and found stability. It was still too close for Katie's comfort, but at least we were safe! and laughing at ourselves hysterically, just imagining what we must have looked like!
Then Katie confessed that she wasn't so much laughing at the sight of me stumbling around in the dark theater and throwing my popcorn around, because she herself was doing the same thing behind me! LOL
So, we were finally at ease enjoying Rocky and stayed until the very end. The other two movie goers had already exited the theater and when the lights came back up, Katie and I made our way safely down the steps, passed the scattered popcorn, and were finally on the floor at ground level. Whew!
We turned the corner to make our way down the hall and out of the theater when Katie doubles over laughing hysterically. She saw it before I did, but then I looked and saw a very large popcorn spill on the floor of the hallway. It seems that when I stumbled on the steps on the way in before the start of the film, the popcorn shower I initiated rained down over the banister and into the hall! LOL
We both had a great laugh over that! Oh boy. Oh, and I stopped by the concession area and got a free refill on my popcorn!
And when I got in the car, as I was settling in and putting on my seatbelt, I accidently got hooked up on my popcorn bag and flipped my popcorn AGAIN! Now there is popcorn all over my car!
It just wasn't meant to be! It bloggles the mind!

Joined For Life
I went to Nashville on a business trip and since I choose not to have cable at my home, I must admit that when I have the opportunity to stay in a hotel, I enjoy checking out what is on TV. I surf the many available tv stations rarely finding anything of real interest or entertainment value. When I do find something that holds my attention, it is usually Court TV, the History Channel, Discovery and last night it was The Learning Channel. Labels: CurrentEvents, entertainment, Personal Interest
I saw a most amazing story of two teenage girls who are "Joined for Life". They are conjoined twins who basically share a body. Abby controls one side of their body and Brittany controls the other. They play softball, ride a bike, type and have recently earned their drivers license! It is the incredible story of two sisters who literally can not live without one another.
This video is just a sample of the lives of these amazing teenagers, and if you ever have the opportunity to see the entire documentary "Joined For Life: The amazing story of Abigail and Brittany Hensel" go for it. It is so encouraging and fascinating to watch. (Let me point you also to Nick, a man born without limbs, who has an intriguing life story as well.)
The other amazing thing I learned was that every now and then there actually IS something worth watching on tv!

What Every Christian Ought to Know
Labels: christianity, entertainment
I am currently three-quarters of the way through a book by Adrian Rogers. Yesterday's chapter dealt with spiritual gifts. In it, Roger's was pointing out that all Christians are given spiritual gifts to use in order to edify the body and glorify God. He told a humorous story that made me giggle so I thought I'd share.
The clergy are those who are paid to lead in the church and the laity, lay people, sit in the pews. That is a main difference between clergy and laity, although all Christians have a role in Christ's church.
Roger's shares what a little girl said when was asked to explain the difference between the clergy and laity. She said, "The clergy are paid for being good, lay people are good for nothin'!"

Remember When?
Labels: entertainment
Remember when it was so much fun to play in large boxes as a kid? Getting a new large appliance, like a refrigerator, oven, washer or dryer, was awesome as a kid because it meant there would be a huge cardboard box to play in.
I used to turn those boxes into rocketships and club houses. Those boxes were such a blast!
Well, I'm here to say it's still fun!
This is me, a 25-15 year old, playing in the empty Christmas tree box, before Katie packed the tree up for another year.

So Far in 2007...
I think it's gonna be better than 2006. Labels: entertainment, Personal Interest
2006 was a year that really financially strained me with major home and auto repairs and other unexpected medical expenses. All I want for 2007 is a little financial relief. Nothing big, just to have more money come in than goes out, at least that goes out unexpectedly.
So far in 2007...the financial crisis seems to have subsided. I found a dollar bill in the parking lot.
Yes!

Podcasts
Here are a couple of podcasts to check out. The first is of my home church, Northbrook. One interesting thing about the messages from Northbrook is that they are delivered through a number of different men in the congregation who have an amazing ability to communicate. These are usually members of our PLT (Pastoral Leadership Team) who give a message on the current topic in whatever series we are going through at the moment. We also are blessed to have men from local Union University to teach as well. There are quite a few messages available online to listen to, and the fact that almost every week we hear from a different voice kind of keeps things from getting stuck in a rut. Chuck, the pastor, does deliver the majority of messages, but we also hear from George, Walt, and Russ quite often. Labels: church, entertainment, podcast
Click here for the podcast of The Gathering Place of Northbrook Church. (There is also a feed subscription in the right menu under "Podcasts".)
The next podcast I will point you too is that of First Baptist Church in Marshalltown, IA. I have roots there because it is at that altar that I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior. The people there started me out in my spiritual walk and I will forever feel tied to that place. Pastor Richard Sipe is one of the most animated and passionate teacher/preachers I have ever had the good fortune to hear. He just has this way of making me understand how much God loves me. He is also fun!
Click here for the podcast of First Baptist Church, Marshalltown, IA. (Podcast feed listed in the right menu under "Podcasts".)
Then, you can listen to the amateur podcasts that Katie and I have thrust onto the unsuspecting world. Some hate it because we are so bad at it. We talk over each other at times and meander all over topics, never really discussing much of anything. (Our biggest trouble is finding podcast topics...so, offer some suggestions please!) Some love it because we have so much fun and the strength of our friendship comes through, even though we poke fun at one another quite a bit. It really is hard to listen to us and not laugh!

The Little Drummer Boy

Football Game Blessings
Last Friday night I went to the kid's high school football game. Their school was vying for a chance to play at state, so it was a high stakes game. I sat there watching and would get teary-eyed at times because I would start thinking about the fact that I was at a high school football game! Labels: entertainment, parenting
I know, being at a high school football game is not very exciting, but when I think about the fact that I am not a mom, and I probably never will be, yet, I was at a high school football game with all the activities going on around me, I realized how blessed I was.
I am a single person, but a VERY blessed single person. Single people normally are not out carpooling kids everywhere, and bundling up to sit through football games on cold nights. I have no kids of my own (don't really want them either! Especially at this late stage!) and never will. But, I am so blessed to be involved in the lives of Katie's kids! You know, I love her kids! They are such a big part of my life and at this point, I can't imagine them not being in it! Many single people do not ever get this privilege!
So, I was at a football game ONLY because I am blessed enough to be involved in the lives of kids I really care about. I get to experience the swell of pride when one of the kids accomplishes something, be it scoring in the basketball game, singing in the musical, dancing in the play, striking a bass drum, receiving recognition for hard work or whatever. At the game, Justin was busy with the band playing bass drum, and Tiffany was hanging out with her friends, and I was sitting there enjoying the electricity in the air over this championship game, which they won by the way! State next week!
God gave me such a gift. He gave me great responsibility in the lives of these kids too, and I don't take that lightly. (It isn't all happy happy joy joy! Anyone with teens would tell you the same! LOL) I never did anything to deserve this blessing of a framily (friends + family), but that just proves how gracious and awesome God is!

A New Cure for the Oncoming Sneeze
The other day I posted a new Cure for Hiccups and today I will share about a cure for that pesky oncoming sneeze, from my own experience. Labels: entertainment
I started to sneeze and it was obvious to my associate at work what was happening because I got that "look" on my face as I awaited the sneeze.
She quickly interjected "SAY PURPLE HIPPOPATAMUS!"
I thought whaaaaat? still feeling that oncoming sneeze, but with a curious sensation now.
She added "YELLOW HIPPOPATAMUS!"
And I literally felt the sneeze drain from my sinus and I never did sneeze.

Ahhhhhhhh...It Was a Good Day
Today I performed with the Lambuth Brass Ensemble at Shiloh National Military Park. This was our second year of performing there as part of a demonstration weekend with live artillery, and other events commemorating the fierce civil war battle fought on that land. We play civil war era music and some other military type music and the audience seems to enjoy it. Labels: christianity, entertainment
I enjoy the road trip to Shiloh and most of all I enjoy spending the day with my best friend Katie. Shiloh is very near where Katie and I use to spend our "God days" at "The River" which is the Tennessee River at Pickwick Dam. We would spend every single Wednesday there doing Bible study and just hanging out enjoying creation when she lived in Selmer, TN. It was an enjoyable time so when I have this gig at Shiloh, we make an entire day of it and go back to "The Peninsula", which is the place we laid claim to back in the day, when we would have our day on the river.
There were many people out fishing and boating today and enjoying the nice weather. It was a beautiful day and the picture depicts some of what was left of the late afternoon before the sun went down for the night. (click the picture to see more images from our day)
Katie waded in the river and splashed around in the waves that were created in the wake of the boats going by. I chose to lie on the blanket with the warm sun to my back and the cool breeze keeping me comfortable. The gentle lapping of the water on shore was relaxing and so I soon found myself napping to the lapping! It was awesome!
On our way home we stopped to eat at Risner's, a restaurant near Selmer, TN that serves steak and we would eat at on occasion when I first moved to TN. We reminisced and had a good time there before heading into Selmer for dessert at The Country Kitchen. The waitress there was a familiar face, but she didn't recognize Katie. Instead, the first person Katie ran into that remembered her was when we stopped at the Walmart south of Jackson, TN on the way home! It was pretty funny that she finally saw a familiar face once we were out of Selmer and almost back to Jackson! LOL
It was a good day.
Back to the grindstone tomorrow.

Shoutfest 2006 in Jackson, TN
Woohooo! Shoutfest RAWKED! Labels: christianity, entertainment
Although, today, I think I've determined I may be too old to "rock out"! I'm feeling a bit stiff and sore and I have a sore throat! LOL
All the bands had excellent well-polished performances and glorified God through their music and through testimonies.
One testimony of note came from the self-proclaimed "tatooed, four-time felon" lead singer Joshua Rojas of Seventh Day Slumber. He shares an amazing testimony of coming from a $400 a day cocaine addiction, stealing from his mother to feed the addiction, memories of his dad beating his mother, his criminal record and a poignant moment of his mother's indignation. He shared that one day he was leaving his home to get his cocaine fix and his "crazy" mother stood in his path shouting "NO! Satan you will NOT have my son!" which brought applause of affirmation from some mothers in the Shoutfest crowd. He continued his story and shared that his addiction continued to consume him to the point he just wanted to end his life and his misery and he told the attentive audience that the mother that continued loving him through all of this walked in on him and witnessed him overdosing on cocaine. She prayed over him as the ambulance came to transport him to the ER and he shared that he chose Christ as His Savior in the back of that ambulance.
Rojas is a gifted evangelist and his testimony of God's love and grace had many eyes welling with tears and some people emotionally breaking down. He cleared the front of the stage to create an "altar" and the Holy Spirit used the words of this young man to speak to troubled and hurting hearts, especially to those people considering suicide. The altar call brought forth
hundreds of young people, some adults, and many people actually ran with abandon to reach that altar! It was a powerful moment!
Joy Williams was a delight to listen to perform. The conversation she had with the audience made it up close and personal and gave life and meaning to her catchy pop songs. She is full of life and "Joy" is a perfect name for her because she seems to have one of those personalities that brings joy to this life.
There were many great bands that performed on stage headlined by Jars of Clay. We heard from Building 429, By the Tree, Flatfoot 56 which was quite unique...celtic punk? Yes! Imagine it....punk rock with bagpipes! They were really fun and the kids loved it. They had kids dancing and laughing as they ran in a ring outside the crowd of people gathered to hear them play. It was an absolute riot to witness that! Fireflight, Fighting Instinct and Jessie Daniels and others also rocked the house but my favoritie was Decemberadio!
I LOVE Decemberadio! I went up to meet the lead singer Josh and I said "I manage a music store and push your CD like crazy! " to which he replied "I know you do, you sang along to every word!" (which was true, except when they did a cover of Lenny Kravitz' 'Are you Gonna Go My Way') He asked if he could sign a the CDs I had but I told him that was already taken care of (by Justin).
Then as I turned to walk away, he called for me and then gave me a hug and thanked me! Woohoo! He said "my name is Josh" and then he apologized for being so sweaty! LOL It was a neat encounter and Katie was cool enough to capture the moment digitally! (To check out other pics from Shoutfest, click the picture!)
Jars of Clay played some of the songs from their upcoming CD, due out THIS Tuesday...September 5, 2006. One of the benefits of the job I have is that I sometimes get a sneak preview of new CDs and "Good Monsters" is one I was looking forward to. CCM Magazine has named it "Album of the Year".
I call it in one word: MASTERPIECE This may be Jars' career defining album (at least to this point, 13 years in), full of intelligent lyrics and deep spiritual observations, great, memorable melodies and is an all around excellent concept album. This is good stuff and among the best CCM album in recent years. I kept watching the guys on stage yesterday knowing that on Tuesday, they are releasing a MASTERPIECE and they performed for us totally oblivious that their new CD may have an impact on CCM music as a standard setter. "Good Monsters" raises the bar! And another thing to note is that Coca-Cola has agreed to donate one dollar for every Jars of Clay "Good Monsters" CD sold during the first month of it's release to Jars of Clay cause Blood :Water Mission.
I had a blast at Shoutfest again this year (This was my 3rd Shoutfest) and I'm already looking forward to next year. Hopefully, I'll be recovered by then!

Ebay Auction - LOTS of CDs!
I'm Makin' Room in My House by selling off a bunch of CDs. I've been collecting them for over 20 years, and 10 of those as a music store associate/manager, so I have a LOT! In fact, I was pushing about 2000 CDs before I finally decided that it is time to move on. Got some good Christian CDs up for auction too! Labels: entertainment
If anything looks good to you there...go bid!
I'll probably be selling off CDs and various books for the next few weeks. I'm having fun making room in my home for more stuff I'll probably sell on Ebay one day!

On Walton's Mountain
Is it unrealistic to believe that the simplicity of life and love in a family could be like that which was found on Walton's mountain? Is it self-defeating to think that a family could exist in such a manner? In a world of "keeping up with the Jones'", capitalism, high-tech gadgets, fast food, dance class, sports, two working parents, daycare, before/after school care, divorce, remarriage, divorce, remarriage, and so on, is it possible to get back to days of togetherness? Is it possible to have dinner together and the entire family participating willfully in the preparations and clean up? Even the church is busy with so many activities that separate family members instead of encouraging unity at home. The children go to children's church. I don't even know which kids belong to which parents because I never see them together! What happened to the day when children came in for part of the service, then were dismissed as the adult message began? I believe some churches still do practice this, but perhaps more should. Then we have our precious youth. They sit together in church, not with their families. They go out to lunch after church, and have dinner together on Sunday nights. They have their mid-week fellowship and Bible Study also. After dinnner and class time are over, they play games and fellowship. These get togethers often go on too long and take from time spent with family, at home. This doesn't include the days when they just get together to go to a movie or shopping. Now, I'm not naive to the fact that teens don't like to "hang out" at home or with their parents. I know that they prefer their peers and crave some independence. But, this is a perfect opportunity to enforce family in spite of it. This is a time to teach them how important togetherness is. Learning about God in a church environment is good, but all the more, it should be practiced at home. It becomes difficult when at home is so limited. Before the days of two parents working, commercialism, and excessive materialism, families often worked together to keep the home running. Now, we have a tendency to pay somebody to raise the kids and clean the house while two parents go to work to make lots of money to pay somebody to raise the kids and clean the house. Today, a woman who chooses to stay home to raise her children is often thought of as simple-minded with nothing to offer the world beyond the walls of her home. Women's rights activists see her as being "opressed" and not treated fairly. A woman of this day is often ashamed to say, "I'm a homemaker". In today's society, admitting a desire to stay home is like admitting a desire to have a disease. I can think of a couple of "old fashioned" families where the husband works and the wife stays home to nurture the family. In their homes it isn't a crime for the woman to let a man be a man and feel like the head of his home. It isn't considered opression for the wife to give him a comfortable home in order that he may concentrate on his role in providing for his family. What a great idea! I wonder where it came from? I'm not saying that a woman is wrong to have a career, or to the contrary, that the woman should stay barefoot and pregnant as a slave to her husband. But, being a wife and a homemaker should never be considered a place of opression or slavery. It's a blessing, an achievement beyond anything this world will ever recognize, an honor, and a joy. A home should be a refuge, not a place the family avoids. It takes parents, not babysitters to raise a family. Dad and mom need to be the example of the adults they want their children to become. If the kids are spending 8-10 hours daily with other role models, coming home to parents who are exhausted and grumpy, but set in the financial department, who are they learning from? What are they learning? Is it more important to have the kids involved in sports, music lessons, dance lessons, clubs, and endless competition to acheive social status? Or is it better to teach them about strong family values and good moral character built through spending time together? Everything should be done in moderation or it eventually will become bondage. It's okay to have extra-curricular activities, but whatever happened to the neighborhood kids getting together at the park for a ball game? Now it's all about traveling competitions, training, and practices that drain the bank account, create huge debt, a need for both parents to work more, and a loss of intimate time spent together...time that can never be redeemed. It starts as early as age three! These things aren't all bad, but when they take over the life of the family, divert them from the life God intended, and lead to feelings of failure for the one who isn't "the best", what is it teaching? Aren't we supposed to do everything for God's glory? I could go into the "soccer for Jesus, beauty queen for Jesus, and dancing for Jesus" mentality but that's another journal. I've often seen my life as one doing without because I've never been well off enough to even gaze at the Jones' back yard. But, because I have focused on trying to be home to raise my kids, ...because I have been unable to achieve certain "status", I have had wonderful opportunities to teach my kids how to appreciate the simple things in life..."
I don't want my children to grow up with memories of a stressed-out, depressed, grumpy mom who is too exhausted to talk about their troubles and help them through heartbreak. That's who I was when I was working and going to school as I made an attempt to achieve status and keep up with society.
I want my kids to remember things like John Boy on Walton's Mountain.....the smell of bacon and coffee rising to their rooms on a cold winter morning, the times of praying together over dinner, voices of laughter filling the home, family nights with popcorn and Veggie Tales, hot cocoa at Christmas time....these are the treasures in life. It's a battle to find these treasures (even to recognize them as such) in a fast paced, materialistic, dollar and status worshipping society, but these are the treasures I seek for my family.
So, now I'm on a quest for the Waltons families of this age. Can they exist? Do they exist? What do they look like? Is this kind of living threatened by extinction?
Perhaps all hope is not lost. Perhaps as I investigate, I will find these families and learn from them. Who are they? Are they the simpletons who live in the country, grow gardens, and live in simple homes? Do they exist in the suburbs of small cities? Do they live in the ghettos? Are they rich, or poor? Perhaps they do exist in many faces, homes, and neighborhoods. Perhaps it isn't unrealistic to believe that there are families today who still have the standards and values found in the Walton household.
Isn't there a part of every person who would like to travel back in time and experience the simplicity of home and family as it was in the days when times were "tough"....and families worked together to make the best of life? Isn't there a part in every person that aches for the heritage found on Walton's Mountain?

This Stinks!
I've been a member of Cleanfilms.com for the last 9 or so months. I've really enjoyed the opportunity to view films that I would not otherwise watch because Cleanfilms edited out all the innappropriate language and gratuitous sex scenes and unnecessary violence. It was so fun looking forward to the next film coming in the mail. Labels: entertainment
But, today, I received this in my email:It is with great regret that we write to inform you that Clean Films is going out of business soon. As you may have heard or read, after three long years of legal struggles, a judge in Colorado has ruled that we cannot sell or rent edited DVDs anymore. While we thought very strongly about appealing the decision, the potential costs and risks to the company, its customers and shareholders was just too great. Accordingly, we have agreed to close our doors after a brief winding-up period.
Apparantly the Hollywood types have decided that it is censorship, tampering with art, or something, and sued Cleanfilms and similar companies. It's a shame. Some argue that it is illegal, but it is not according to the Fair Use Act which allows individuals to edit films for renting and/or buying as long as it is accompanied by an original copy of the movie. It's the same law that allows for parodies and things like that. It is totally legal.
Cleanfilms gave me and the framily an opportunity to view films we wouldn't otherwise watch. It allowed us to view movies like Shawshank Redemption without the language that a 13 year old shouldn't be exposed to, or a 40 year old doesn't want to hear. We could watch other movies minus the sex scene that really has nothing to do with the story anyway. I'm gonna miss Cleanfilms a lot.
When will we Christians unite? When will we stand on our faith? When will we refuse to pay $ for violent, sex crazed movies laced with horrendous language? Hollywood thinks we want the stuff they are churning out...and frankly, why wouldn't they think we want it?

Needs a Caption!
Labels: entertainment
When I was home in Ohio on vacation, I rummaged through some pictures in the desk drawer and photo albums. This was one of the precious pictures that I happened upon, and it deserves a caption!
I found some old pics of my parents and grandparents and just had to scan some. I emailed them to myself and have been doctoring some of them with the picture programs available to me, in order to restore some of the original quality of the picture. It's amazing what being able to simply add some color and sharpen a picture can do to give it new life.
I even found some old band pictures of myself and the most notable thing is how blonde my hair once was, outside of the fact it was over twenty years ago! That was back in the day I spent a LOT more time outdoors!
Anyway, this is my sister and her daughter sharing some quality time together, and I think it deserves a special caption. Leave your ideas in the comment section.

CD Cassette
A customer came in yesterday and asked with her very southern, southern drawl, "Do you have any CD blues cassettes?" Labels: entertainment
I inquired further and asked "are you asking me for CD cassettes?"
"Yeeaah" she said, "CD blues cassettes".
Would you like an 8-track vinyl record with that?

Parental Guidance for Elements of Faith?
Labels: christianity, entertainment
Wow! This looks like a movie I want to see! I love a good sports film, and this one is about a Christian high school football coach who desperately seeks God to help him battle fear and failure. I'm sure it will be a very powerful movie for a family to view.
But, oh, wait a minute...is it appropriate for kids? There's no bad language, or gratuitous sex scenes, but...OHHHHHHHHHHHH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, there's a Christian message! How evil. A PG rating has been slapped on this film for it's faith message.
I wonder if it were a movie containing Islamic themes, or Buddhist themes what the rating might be? Should faith elements be given the same consideration as language, sex, or violence contained within a film?
Plugged In Online reports that the movie Facing the Giants, has received a PG rating for "thematic elements." Among the themes the MPAA believes are worthy of a parental warning are strong Christian messages and characters who evangelize others.

CrimsonLight.com .no frills .no gimmicks .just reviews
"Day of Fire will soon be a recognizable name to all Christian rock music fans everywhere, and most likely any fan of rock music period. There is no denying that these guys know how to rock! Their music is high energy, fast-paced, fist-pumping, and head banging, but there is no way to miss Who the source of all their energy is."

Hyper Static Union
Labels: entertainment
Read my latest review on the debut release of Hyper Static Union!
Here is a teaser "Hyper Static Union is a rock band that infuses infectious melodies together with a dynamic, rhythmic funk that is the foundation for it’s driving solid rock sound. Lead singer and main songwriter, Shawn Lewis, has a smooth vocal quality with amazing range that lifts the music right off the disc, through the ear, and into the part of the brain where melodic hooks get stuck."

On Humility
Nichole Nordeman, recording artist and now a contributing editor of CCM Magazine, ponders humility in her inaugural column. She makes the observation that "humility in Christ is inseparably linked to confidence in Christ" which is a profundity I've heard before. Labels: christianity, entertainment
People often mistake humility as something that would not allow a christian to ever receive praise for anything, or wouldn't associate a leader as being humble, as they are two seemingly incompatible things.
There was one part of the column that I particularly took note of, and that is a quote Nordeman shared from Thomas Merton, a Franciscan monk, who said: "a humble man receives praise the way a clean window takes the light of the sun. The truer and more intense the light is, the less you see of the glass."
Dare I pray for humility?

Flashback
Isn't it cool how music can take you back in time? I can hear a song, and immediately I am transported back to a certain time, sometimes to a specific time and place. My friends have made mention of the fact that I can usually announce the exact year of the song playing "yeah...I remember that! It was the summer of '78 and I was always playing that on the jukebox at the lake"...you know...stuff like that. "...the Internet and the IPOD is killing the album concept altogether." Labels: entertainment
I remember my first album. Oh, how I would sit and listen to the music and examine Andy Gibb on the front cover of "Flowing Rivers". A lot of people may remember Andy Gibb for his second album, "Shadow Dancing", but his first album was the best. No disco, just smooth, soft rock and borderline country. I think Andy Gibb was my first celebrity "crush" (Lee Majors came later) and I would sing "I Just Want to Be Your Everything" to him! LOL I'm back in front of my stereo at the old kitchen table that was moved into the basement. It's where I spent a lot of time growing up, at that table playing my records, looking over all the album cover art, reading the liner notes and devouring every lyric.

The other music I frequently flashback to would be most of what I listened to during my high school years. I love the band Rush...all that music coming from just three guys! I was always so facinated with the lyrics and drumming of Neil Peart too. Good stuff. "Moving Pictures" was my first Rush album, but I loved it so much, especially "Red Barchetta" and "Camera Eye", that I picked up all their prior stuff too. I think their early stuff is better, but I'll always enjoy their sound.
Pink Floyd, "The Wall", had all high school students singing the anthem "We don't need no education...". Boy, were we stupid. Good thing we got an education anyways! I also remember playing the thing backwards trying to decipher the backmasking.
"Heard it from a frieeeeend whooooooo, heard it from a frieeeend whoooooo, heard it from another...." was so catchy off "Hi Infidelity", REO Speedwagon's best album. "Take it on the Run" and "Keep On
Journey, "Escape", another album that takes me back to high school. "Don't Stop Believing"...wow...I'm right back in my sophomore year, in Biology class. I hated Biology. I don't want to be here...aaaaaaauuuuuuuugggggggghhhhhh! "Stone in Love" was one rockin' cut off that album and I remember singing screaming "Lay it Down" at the top of my lungs. Steve Perry cranked out higher notes that my female throat could muster! "Mother, Father", "Dead or Alive" were two of my favorites off this album, but the title track "Escape" might be my top pick from this one.
Wow, flashbacks are fun!

Create Your Own Radio Station
I found this really cool website that creates your very own personalized radio station of sorts. You tell it what bands or songs you like, and it starts playing a bunch of music that is stylistically similar. It is neat! It is very helpful in discovering new bands that you may have never heard of, and/or gives you the opportunity to check out a band you are curious about. You can play around with it a bit and really narrow down the type of stuff you are looking for too. Labels: entertainment
Check out Pandora! It's fun!
It's almost like being your own DJ and you get to create the playlist. You can share your "station" too! Here's mine! Yep! SLP (my initials) Radio!
I wish there were a way to specify genre, because I'm particular about the type of music I will listen to, I don't want anything foul, and this is why.

I Stand Corrected
Hmmmmm. Labels: entertainment, Personal Interest
When I was a teenager, I remember sleeping in until 11:30am or noon on the weekends and on any and everyday off from school. I thought that was the norm. I thought teens wanted to stay up until "all hours" and then sleep in. I thought that is what teenagers did.
So, when Justin, 16, retires for the night at 8 or 8:30pm, I find that highly unusual. The dude is up at 6 or 6:30am each and every morning...school or no school. I tease him and call him a "freak"! LOL And tell him "it is just not normal for a teen to go to bed so early!"
Well, the other day I posted a poll so I could prove my point. 18 kind people voted and the results are in:
I am surprised by this!
I stand corrected. Apparantly there are more freak teenagers out there than I thought!
Who can trust the polls anyway!?!
